Trailer for Rabach (Reckless), Documentary, Runtime 11:02 Released 09/2025
Like many of his contemporaries John Sheehey emigrated from the rural poverty of Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s and came to London as a teenager where he worked as a labourer in the building trade and on the motorways for a number of years. Difficulties with mental health and addiction led to him experiencing street homelessness for over a decade. Despite having never been to an art gallery before the age of 50 he was first introduced to art in mental health and daycare centres following which he was given a bursary to attend University and given access to the facilities to pursue his passion.
Today John lives in Archway where he paints, produces lithographs, woodcuts, sculptures and poetry at a prodigious rate. When his house is full he gives the work away- shortly before filming the British Heart Foundation filled a low loader van with his efforts from the past 6 months. John has become recognised worldwide as an ‘Outsider’ artist and has shown his work in galleries and publications around the world.
In this film John shares his experiences and perspectives on life and creativity. Unlike many artists John has a refreshing lack of consideration for career progression within the art world or what people might think of his work and a healthy lack of fear of the blank page.
